On Tuesday, the Honorary Consul Corps Nepal (HCCN) celebrated Charter Day and held its 17th Annual General Meeting at Hotel Marriott Kathmandu.
The main event was the election of Chandra Prasad Dhakal, the Honorary Consul of Indonesia to Nepal, as the new Dean of HCCN. Outgoing Dean Vishnu Agarwal officially passed on the leadership and the organization’s logo to Dhakal, ensuring a smooth leadership transition.
HCCN, with 62 Honorary Consuls and Consul Generals representing countries without permanent diplomatic missions in Nepal, plays a key role in building economic, cultural, and diplomatic relations between Nepal and these countries.
The Chief Guest, Minister for Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba, praised the Honorary Consuls and Consul Generals for their important work in strengthening Nepal’s international relations. She stressed the need for economic diplomacy to attract foreign investment from these countries.
Outgoing Dean Vishnu Kumar Agarwal highlighted the core values of service, volunteerism, and goodwill that define HCCN’s work. He pointed out the success of the Lumbini Conclave on ‘Global Peace and Prosperity’ in promoting peace, tourism, trade, and mutual understanding. The conclave, organized under HCCN’s guidance, saw participation from 19 non-residential ambassadors and mission representatives.
Agarwal also spoke about HCCN’s humanitarian efforts during crises like the Nepal earthquakes and the COVID-19 pandemic, noting how the organization helped provide aid and repatriate over 5,000 foreign nationals during these tough times.
In his new role, Dean Dhakal shared his vision for HCCN, focusing on advancing economic diplomacy and protecting the interests of the represented countries. He promised to work closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to seize opportunities for Nepal’s economic development.
“I promise that HCCN will actively work to increase Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and sign Bilateral Investment Agreements (BIAs) with as many countries as possible. Our efforts will help bring significant investment into Nepal and support our nation’s economic growth,” he stated.
Dhakal also spoke about creating a favorable investment environment in Nepal.
“By attracting FDI, we bring in capital, expertise, technology, and global best practices. Our role is to promote Nepal on the global stage and showcase our strengths to investors,” he said.
The event also marked a new digital milestone with the launch of the HCCN website ((http://www.hcc-nepal.org) (http://www.hcc-nepal.org)) by Foreign Minister Rana. This new platform will improve transparency and provide information about HCCN’s activities and initiatives.
