Compared to the currently used lithium-ion cells, Honda’s new solid-state battery is expected to be 50% smaller, 35% lighter, and 25% cheaper. These batteries will also offer higher safety and faster charging speeds.
Honda claims that its solid-state battery will provide a driving range of up to 1,000 kilometers on a single charge. By 2040, Honda aims to further reduce the size, weight, and cost of the battery, increasing the driving range to 1,250 kilometers.
To figure out how to produce solid-state batteries on a large scale, Honda has already established a pilot production facility. According to media reports, the company is preparing to start testing production soon.
According to Takeshi Ueda, Chief Engineer of Honda’s R&D Innovative Research Excellence, the pilot line has been created to quickly identify and address any production issues. It will also assist in developing prototype batteries.
Other brands, including Toyota, BMW, Nissan, and Volkswagen, have already made progress in the development of solid-state batteries. Major automakers in China are also aggressively working on this new technology.
