A special court in Dhaka has sentenced former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to a total of 10 years in prison in connection with two separate corruption cases involving the Rajuk New City housing project. Judge Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-4 delivered the verdict on Monday, handing down five-year sentences for each case. The charges involve the illegal allotment of two 10-katha plots in the Purbachal area, where the prosecution proved that the accused manipulated official processes and abused their power through the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK).
The legal consequences extend to several of Hasina’s family members who were also found guilty in the land allotment scandal. Tulip Siddiq received a four-year prison term, while Radwan Mujib Siddiq and Azmina Siddiq were each sentenced to seven years. Additionally, RAJUK member Mohammad Khurshid Alam, who surrendered to the court, was sentenced to two years. All convicted individuals face a fine of 100,000 Taka, with a failure to pay resulting in an additional six months of incarceration. Sheikh Hasina remains in India, having already faced a previous death sentence related to allegations of genocide during past civil unrest.
