Kathmandu – Takaichi Sanae has been formally re-elected as the Prime Minister of Japan. After the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) secured a historic majority in the snap general election, she received majority support from both houses of parliament. With this, she has become Japan’s 105th Prime Minister and has continued her tenure as the first female head of government in the country’s history.
Before the formation of the new government, the Cabinet resigned collectively on Tuesday morning, as per constitutional provisions. Following the re-election, it is expected that Takaichi will reappoint most of the current ministers. The list of the new Cabinet is expected to be made public by Wednesday.
In the general election held on February 8, the ruling party won an unprecedented two-thirds majority in the lower house, receiving a clear mandate from the people. This outcome has further strengthened Takaichi’s political position. At 64 years old, Takaichi made history in October when she became Japan’s first female Prime Minister by winning the leadership of her party. Within just four months of assuming office, she had called for a snap election, which led to an extraordinary victory for her party.
With the re-election, the government now holds a strong parliamentary majority, which is expected to provide continuity and stability in implementing upcoming policy agendas.
