Kathmandu. Statistics have been released revealing that 129 journalists and media workers lost their lives worldwide in 2025. A report published by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) states that the number of journalist deaths this year has reached an all-time high.
According to the report, Israel is alleged to be responsible for two-thirds of the journalist deaths in 2025. Additionally, more than three-quarters of the total deceased were killed while working in conflict zones.
CPJ data shows that among the 86 media personnel killed by Israeli attacks in 2025, over 60% were Palestinian journalists reporting from Gaza. The report highlights that journalists have faced extreme risks during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. However, the Israeli military continues to maintain that it does not deliberately target journalists.
Jodie Ginsberg, CEO of CPJ, issued a statement noting that at a time when access to information is more critical than ever, the record number of journalists being killed is a matter of grave concern. She emphasized that when journalists are killed simply for gathering news, everyone is put at risk.
The report concludes that the state of press freedom and the safety of journalists in conflict zones is becoming increasingly complex and dangerous.
