KATHMANDU, August 31: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has introduced a new system which will burn old, ripped bank notes to produce briquette. The technology introduced from the Netherlands will burn unusable paper bills and produce briquettes for fuel purposes. Prior to the new system, unusable bills were burnt and destroyed.
According to chief of the Currency Management Department of NRB, Rewati Prasad Nepal, an agreement was made between NRB and a company from the Netherlands in 2020 to procure eight machines to produce briquette. Of them, four machines have arrived in Nepal. Plans have been made to install four machines in Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Birgunj and Nepalgunj in the initial phase. The machine in Kathmandu has already started producing briquette while the machine in Nepalgunj will come into operation from today.
“The remaining four machines will arrive by September and will be emplaced in Janakpur, Bhairahawa, Pokhara and Dhangadi to start briquette production. Abot 400 kilograms of ash has been collected by burning 400 bundles of unusable money bills,” Nepal said.
According to NRB, the machines are purchased to minimize the pollution caused by incinerating bank notes and to make proper use of the waste.
According to Chief Nepal, the machines burn the bank notes and turn them into briquettes. The briquettes produced can be used in brick factories, coal-dependent industries and household uses as well. The NRB disposes of a huge amount of unusable bills every year.
