Kathmandu : CPN (UML) Chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation among major political parties to navigate the country through difficult times.
In a recent interview with RSS, Oli stated, “We believe that democracy thrives on healthy competition. We drafted the Constitution together and should move forward together. The nation can find solutions by working hand-in-hand.”
When asked about the possibility of major parties like the Nepali Congress and UML working together to address national challenges, Oli recalled that the UML had previously proposed collaboration with the Congress during the Constitution’s drafting. He stressed that the UML has always been open to dialogue and has often led efforts for consensus on national issues.
Oli highlighted the UML’s constructive role in the aftermath of the 2015 earthquake, working with the CPN (Maoist Centre) on reconstruction and constitution-making despite being an opposition party at the time. He noted that in the past, the UML, Congress, and Maoist Centre have united for the nation’s benefit and should do so again to provide political stability, which the citizens currently desire.
“The UML respects the people’s aspirations and the nation’s needs. Collaboration among key political players is essential for stability. The UML is ready to take the lead in this effort,” Oli said.
He emphasized that the Constitution is key to the nation’s happiness and prosperity and that dialogue is crucial for resolving misunderstandings. “We may not agree on everything, but we need consensus on the basics. Healthy competition between the ruling and opposition parties is essential, but so is consensus on fundamental principles.”
Oli also stressed the importance of delivering results while in government, saying, “Being in power means developing the country and addressing people’s problems. A government is pointless if it fails to do this.”
He urged the Nepali Congress to join forces with the UML to strengthen the system envisioned by the Constitution and to be serious about law formulation. “We need to stand together on basic democratic principles. We fought hard for this system and chose it ourselves. If issues arise during its implementation, the Constitution should be amended. Dialogue and consensus, with the people at the center, are crucial for its success,” Oli concluded.
