A cloudburst struck a remote village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, leading to deadly flash floods that have claimed four lives and left six others injured, according to Indian media reports.
The disaster occurred in the Gujjar community settlement of the village of Sophain, where a landslide—triggered by the intense cloudburst—buried four houses under debris. The incident happened overnight, causing widespread destruction in the area.
Authorities report that around 80% of the village’s main road has been washed away, severely hampering rescue and relief operations. So far, four bodies have been recovered from the debris.
Due to relentless heavy rainfall, water levels in many local reservoirs are rising rapidly. The Ujh River, in particular, is flowing dangerously close to the warning mark.
This tragedy comes on the heels of a similar cloudburst event in Jammu and Kashmir just last week, which led to flash floods that killed over 65 people across the region.
Rescue teams are on-site, and operations are ongoing despite difficult terrain and weather conditions.
