Kathmandu: Relatives and daughters who could not receive Dashain tika on Vijaya Dashami are continuing to visit their elders to receive tika, jamara and blessings.
In many parts of Nepal, the tradition of receiving Dashain tika continues even after Vijaya Dashami, the main day of the festival, and lasts until Kojagrat Purnima. Family members who were unable to return home on the main day, including married daughters and relatives living far away, visit their elders during this period to receive blessings.
As a result, family gatherings, tika ceremonies and the exchange of greetings continue in many households even after Vijaya Dashami.
Today also marks Papankusha Ekadashi, observed on the eleventh day of the bright lunar fortnight in the month of Ashwin. In Hindu tradition, the day is considered auspicious for worshipping Lord Vishnu, observing fasts and performing charitable activities.
Devotees traditionally worship Lord Vishnu in his Padmanabha form on this occasion. Religious practices include fasting, singing devotional hymns, reading sacred texts and making donations according to one’s means. Helping people in need is also regarded as an important religious act.
Papankusha Ekadashi thus combines religious devotion with the continuing family traditions of Dashain. Those who missed receiving tika on Vijaya Dashami can still visit their elders for tika, jamara and blessings until Kojagrat Purnima, according to customary practice.
