Kathmandu . A Digital Training Hub Project, a collaborative initiative between Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) and Orbis International India, has officially been launched at Biratnagar Eye Hospital. The project is aimed at transforming ophthalmic training in Nepal through the use of advanced digital tools, an upgraded wet lab, and the global Cybersight platform.
This initiative is said to be the first of its kind in Nepal. Its core purpose is to develop skilled human resources in the field of eye healthcare by delivering world-class training to clinical staff, paramedics, as well as administrative and management professionals. The project particularly focuses on supporting individuals who are unable to participate in international training due to constraints such as time, finances, or language barriers. It is believed that the professionals trained through this project will significantly contribute to reducing preventable blindness in Nepal through quality medical intervention.
A bilateral memorandum of understanding was recently signed in Biratnagar between NNJS Secretary General Bharat Bahadur Chand and Orbis International India’s Director of Programme, Dr. Rhishi Raj Borah. The agreement marks a significant partnership to establish Nepal as a digital hub for eye care training in South Asia. Chand shared that under the project, high-standard training will be conducted targeting key professional groups, and there are future plans to expand the training into different languages as needed.
According to Orbis International’s official statement, the goal of the project is to enhance the capacity of eye health professionals and healthcare systems to better treat and prevent blindness and visual impairment. During the signing ceremony, Dr. Borah commended Nepal’s advancements in the field of eye care, stating that the country has made exemplary progress and that the collaboration with NNJS reflects the potential to further elevate Nepal’s role in eye health innovation.
Participants in the training will be able to join either in person or through a blended learning format, allowing them to learn from their own workplaces. The training programs will utilize cutting-edge technologies and cover key areas such as cataract surgery, glaucoma, vitreoretina, anterior segment treatment, optometry science, wet lab management, and program administration.
This digital training hub marks a milestone in Nepal’s ongoing efforts to modernize and expand its eye health services, with the goal of making high-quality training accessible to professionals across the country and the region.
