Afghanistan’s disaster management agency has reported that at least 61 people have died over the past three days due to severe snowfall and heavy rain affecting various parts of the country.
The extreme weather has left more than 100 individuals injured and caused the destruction of over 400 homes. Officials warned that the death toll and damage assessments are expected to rise as reports continue to come in from remote areas.
The heavy snowfall has caused significant logistical disruptions, blocking several key transportation routes. This includes the main highway over the Hindukush, which serves as a vital link between the capital, Kabul, and the northern provinces. Several provinces are currently grappling with the aftermath of the storms and avalanches, with Bamiyan, Parwan, Balkh, and Maidan Wardak being among the hardest-hit regions.
