Today, August 15, India is celebrating its 78th Independence Day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the celebrations by hoisting the national flag at the historic Red Fort in Delhi, followed by his address to the nation. This will be Modi’s 11th consecutive Independence Day speech as Prime Minister. The day will also feature a grand parade highlighting India’s military strength, cultural richness, and technological advancements. Here’s the complete schedule for the day:
The ceremony will start with PM Modi being welcomed by top government and military officials. He will then review the Guard of Honour, this year coordinated by the Indian Navy.
A significant moment will occur when the Prime Minister unfurls the national flag, accompanied by a 21-gun salute fired by the 1721 Field Battery using indigenous 105mm Light Field Guns.
Following the flag unfurling, Modi will inspect the Guard of Honour before heading to the Red Fort’s ramparts. He will be greeted by Defence Minister, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, Naval Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, and Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari. During the flag-raising ceremony, a National Flag Guard, consisting of one officer and 32 personnel each from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with 128 Delhi Police officers, will present the ‘Rashtriya Salute’.
The Punjab Regiment Military Band, including one junior commission officer and 25 soldiers, will perform the National Anthem during the flag unfurling and salute.
PM Modi will deliver his address to the nation from the Red Fort’s ramparts at 7:30 AM. The event will be broadcast live on Doordarshan and other media channels, and will also be streamed on the Press Information Bureau (PIB) YouTube channel, as well as on social media platforms X (formerly Twitter) via @PIB_India and the PMO Twitter handle.
This year, approximately 6,000 special guests from various segments of Indian society—including youth, tribal communities, farmers, women, and beneficiaries of government schemes—are invited to witness the ceremony.
In addition, 161 field functionaries from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, along with their spouses and companions, will be honored as special guests. These include selected women workers from Anganwadis, Sakhi One-Stop Centres, Sankalp: Hubs for Empowerment of Women, Child Welfare Committees, and District Child Protection Units.
Security in Delhi has been significantly heightened, with over 10,000 police officers and 3,000 traffic personnel deployed. The city will also see the presence of snipers, elite SWAT teams, and sharpshooters positioned at key locations.
The Delhi Traffic Police has issued advisories regarding route closures and diversions, which will be in effect until 10 AM.
