“Kathmandu, A forthcoming international conference spanning three days will focus on the critical issue of lightning and methods to mitigate its impact within Nepal. The event is set to be held in Lalitpur, commencing tomorrow.
The conference will convene approximately 100 participants, including experts hailing from diverse countries, with Nepal being well-represented. Eminent specialists from nations such as India, the United States, Brazil, France, Sweden, Israel, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, among others, are expected to grace the conference with their presence. During this international gathering, a total of 44 individuals will present their research papers, as stated by Prof. Dr. Shreeram Sharma, a recognized authority on lightning.
The primary focus of the conference will encompass discussions on the global status of lightning occurrences, the ongoing initiatives for lightning prevention, and pertinent subjects that warrant attention from policymakers. Dr. Sharma further emphasized that the conference’s primary objective is to formulate strategies in support of policymaking.
Notably, out of the 44 research papers scheduled for presentation, a substantial 28 originate from Nepal. Nepal currently lacks a comprehensive lightning-related information system, and noteworthy efforts towards lightning mitigation have been sparse. It is worth noting that Nepal ranks fourth globally in terms of lightning risk among countries that have conducted research on this subject.”
