Kathmandu: The Israeli military has carried out airstrikes in Yemen, primarily targeting bases of Iran-backed Houthi rebels. According to reports, the strikes killed 10 people and injured another 10. The attack came a day after Israel launched an airstrike on Doha, the capital of Qatar.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the strikes were in response to a recent Houthi attack on a southern Israeli airport. “Those who attack us will not be spared. We have targeted their terrorist bases and facilities,” Netanyahu said.
The Houthis have maintained control over Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and much of the country’s northern region for over a decade. Following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 18, the Houthis began launching missile and drone attacks on Israel and on ships in the Red Sea in support of Gaza. They claim their actions are an expression of solidarity with Hamas. In response, Israel has repeatedly bombed Houthi strongholds.
According to the Israeli military, its fighter jets targeted military camps, Houthi information offices, and fuel storage facilities in Yemen’s northern Al-Jawf province and in Sanaa. Houthi Supreme Political Council President Mahdi al-Mashat condemned the Israeli strikes, vowing retaliation and calling them “brutal Jewish aggression.”
Last month, Israel bombed a Houthi cabinet meeting in Yemen, killing Prime Minister Ahmed al-Rahwi and several other senior officials. However, real power within the Houthi movement remains with its founder, Abdul Malik al-Houthi.
In recent months, Israel has adopted an increasingly aggressive stance against its regional adversaries. Alongside its two-year-long war in Gaza, Israel has carried out multiple strikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and against various sites in Syria.
