The Indian government has decided to change the name of Kerala. The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to rename the state from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralam,’ according to Indian media reports. However, the name-change process has just begun. Following the Cabinet’s approval, the President of India is required to send the bill to the Kerala Legislative Assembly for its opinion, in accordance with legal provisions.
This process will be carried out under Article 3 of the Indian Constitution. After receiving the state assembly’s opinion, the government will take further action, and a recommendation from the President will be sought to introduce the bill in Parliament. The bill will officially change the state’s name from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralam.’
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) confirmed the decision, stating, “The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal to change the name of Kerala today.” Earlier, on June 24, 2024, the Kerala Legislative Assembly had passed a resolution to change the state’s name from ‘Kerala’ to ‘Keralam.’
