Kathmandu – UML Standing Committee member Mahesh Basnet has strongly criticized the government for cutting down the security detail of former Prime Minister and party chairman KP Sharma Oli, calling it a serious mistake.
Basnet accused the government of abandoning its legal and moral responsibility to protect former high-ranking officials, a duty he says is upheld by governments around the world.
Expressing concern over the decision, Basnet declared that if the government fails to provide adequate security, UML itself is capable and ready to ensure Oli’s safety.
“This is not just about politics,” he said, “it’s about respecting national leadership and maintaining dignity beyond personal or political bias.”
His remarks come amid rising tensions between the opposition and the ruling coalition, signaling a deepening trust deficit over state responsibilities and political respect.
