Afghanistan . More than 30,000 Afghan refugees returned to their homeland from Iran on Wednesday through the Islam Qala border crossing in western Herat province, marking one of the largest mass returns in recent times, according to local authorities.
Mawlawi Ahmadullah Muttaqi, the provincial director of the Information and Culture Department, confirmed the development and said that all essential services — including drinking water, food, and immediate medical assistance — have been made available to the returnees.
Afghanistan shares two major border crossings with Iran: one in Herat and another in Nimroz province. Both points have recently seen a significant spike in the number of returnees.
According to the provincial director of refugees and repatriation in Nimroz, an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 individuals, including roughly 300 families, are now returning daily via the Pul-e-Abresham crossing.
Currently, nearly 7 million Afghans are living abroad — mostly in Iran and Pakistan — with the majority lacking proper documentation.
