During his official visit to Malaysia, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held high-level delegation talks with his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, on February 8, 2026, to advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. A major highlight of the visit was the announcement of a new Indian Consulate General to be established in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, a move aimed at enhancing consular services and boosting trade and tourism in East Malaysia. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India and Malaysia share a “special relationship” as maritime neighbors, noting that Malaysia is home to the world’s second-largest Indian diaspora.
The leaders witnessed the exchange of several key agreements covering semiconductors, digital technology, AI, healthcare, and food security, while also committing to strengthened cooperation in defense, counter-terrorism, and maritime security.
Furthering people-to-people ties, PM Modi highlighted recent initiatives such as the extension of Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card eligibility to the 6th generation of Malaysian citizens of Indian origin and the introduction of the Thiruvalluvar Scholarships for Malaysian students.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomed these developments, noting that the relationship has moved beyond routine diplomacy toward a partnership built on mutual trust and shared economic goals.
Both leaders also discussed increasing air connectivity and simplifying visa regulations to capitalize on the surge in bilateral tourism. This visit, Modi’s first foreign trip of 2026, concludes with a renewed roadmap for the “IMPACT” framework—the India-Malaysia Partnership for Advancing Collective Transformation.
