Kathmandu: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane held intensive discussions with five party lawmakers who are also legal professionals on Monday, amid growing speculation about filing impeachment motions against some Supreme Court justices.
Those attending the meeting included Law Minister Sobita Gautam and lawmakers Madhu Chaulagain, Samikshya Baskota, Sulav Kharel and Gazala Shamim Mikrani.
During the discussion, Lamichhane sought clarification on the legal procedures for filing an impeachment motion and the grounds on which such a motion could be brought against judges.
Speaking to Nepal Press, advocate and lawmaker Madhu Chaulagain said that there was no immediate plan to initiate impeachment proceedings.
According to Chaulagain, Lamichhane also expressed the view that the judiciary should not be left weakened or damaged in the process.
Another lawmaker who attended the meeting said Lamichhane was particularly concerned that any impeachment motion against the judges currently under discussion must be supported by clearly established grounds and reasons.
Lamichhane reportedly stressed that once an impeachment motion is registered, it should not be withdrawn later.
The RSP chairperson also pointed out that although a decision had been made to form the Impeachment Recommendation Committee, the committee had not yet been constituted. Therefore, he questioned the appropriateness of registering an impeachment motion at this stage.
The discussions come amid growing political debate over possible impeachment proceedings against certain Supreme Court justices. However, no immediate decision to file an impeachment motion was made during Monday’s meeting.
