Kathmandu: Golam Sarwar, the Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), visited Bhutan from July 2nd to 6th for an official introduction. According to a press release from the SAARC Secretariat, he had productive meetings with Bhutan’s leadership and dignitaries.
During his visit, Ambassador Sarwar met with His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on July 5th in Thimphu. He updated the King on SAARC’s current activities and future plans, seeking Bhutan’s ongoing support for SAARC.
The Bhutanese King appreciated Ambassador Sarwar’s role and assured full support for revitalizing SAARC through renewed political and diplomatic efforts. They also discussed Bhutan’s vision for the Gelephu Mindfulness City, aimed at becoming a significant economic hub linking South Asia, Southeast Asia, and beyond.
Ambassador Sarwar also met with Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Dasho Tshering Tobgay, and the Foreign Minister, Mr. D.N. Dhungyel. He thanked Bhutan for endorsing his appointment and discussed ways to advance SAARC’s goals with their support.
Both the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister expressed their appreciation for Ambassador Sarwar’s efforts and reaffirmed Bhutan’s commitment to SAARC’s goals, which aim to benefit a quarter of the global population in the region.
During his visit, Secretary-General Sarwar also visited the SAARC Development Fund (SDF) Secretariat and discussed ongoing projects across SAARC member states. He emphasized the SDF’s importance in regional socio-economic development and provided guidance for its enhancement.
Accompanying him was Mr. Dawa Tshering, Director at the SAARC Secretariat, who attended official meetings and events in Bhutan alongside the Secretary-General.
