The Saptakoshi River has seen a renewed surge in water flow following continuous rainfall across eastern Nepal’s hills and plains. According to Koshi Barrage authorities, the river’s flow reached 173,040 cusecs (cubic feet per second) as of 10 AM Tuesday morning – a significant increase from 164,490 cusecs recorded just an hour earlier at 9 AM.
The fluctuating water levels come after Monday night’s peak flow of 179,740 cusecs, which had temporarily subsided before Tuesday’s fresh surge. The Saptakoshi Water Measurement Center has maintained its red flag warning system, activating alert signals whenever flows exceed the 150,000 cusec danger threshold.
Local authorities remain on high alert as the unstable conditions continue. “We’re monitoring the barrage round-the-clock,” said a barrage official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The current levels are manageable but concerning given the ongoing rainfall upstream.”
The Koshi Barrage – a critical flood control structure for both Nepal and downstream Bihar, India – has historically caused devastating floods when breached. Meteorologists attribute the rising water levels to sustained rainfall across the river’s catchment area in recent days.
