Kathmandu – Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has issued a stern warning that the upcoming elections, which may take place without her party, Awami League, could plant the seeds of a new national divide.
In her first public statement since her downfall in 2024, Hasina condemned the charges against her as politically motivated, calling the ongoing war crimes trial a “mockery of justice” and a “preordained verdict.”
Hasina, who fled the country by helicopter after an uprising led by students in August 2024 ended her 15-year rule, also criticized the government for its heavy-handed response, which she said led to the deaths of around 1,400 people, according to the UN.
Currently seeking refuge in India, Hasina described the allegations against her as baseless and part of a political conspiracy.
Despite admitting to some mistakes during her rule, she maintained that her decisions were made with the intention of reducing violence and promoting harmony. Reflecting on the tragic loss of lives during the protests, she expressed deep sorrow.
When asked about her return to politics, Hasina emphasized that her priority is the stability and well-being of Bangladesh, not personal power.
