Kathmandu- Dario Amodei, the CEO of the AI company Anthropic, has urged for a slight slowdown in the pace of artificial intelligence development alongside stricter safety oversight. In an essay published on Saturday, Amodei stated that AI development should not be stopped altogether, but that companies and governments must be given sufficient time to manage its growing risks. He proposed implementing independent monitoring, industry-standard rules, and global regulations during the development phase of AI systems.
Amodei’s proposal has received support from rival tech leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Altman agreed that independent safety evaluations are necessary, while Musk noted that Amodei’s perspective is correct.
Recently, concerns have intensified regarding AI’s potential for powerful cyberattack capabilities and the risk of systems operating beyond human control. Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned that unless the current pace of AI development is dialed back, it could pose a severe threat to human existence.
Amodei noted that slowing down development slightly could buy an extra year or two to build technologies capable of mitigating AI risks. However, he emphasized that such measures cannot be limited to the United States alone and must be coordinated globally, including with China.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has expressed no interest in slowing down AI progress, cautioning that falling behind in the AI race could lead to serious consequences. On the other hand, some critics argue that the proposal to slow AI development is less about safety and more an attempt by major tech firms to solidify their control over the sector.
