Kathmandu – The second largest festival for Nepalis, Yama Panchak, which begins on the Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, officially starts today. The festival is observed after 11:01 AM, when the Dwadasi (twelfth day) concludes and the Trayodashi (thirteenth day) begins.
According to the Nepal Panchang Pranic Development Committee, Dhanteras, also known as Dhan Trayodashi, is celebrated today after 11:01 AM due to the arrival of the Kartik Krishna Trayodashi.
This year, Yam Deep Daan will commence tomorrow, Wednesday. The crow festival (Kag Tihar) also falls on the same day, Kartik 14, as stated by the committee’s chair, Prof. Shreekrishna Adhikari. Traditionally, the day of Dhanteras is observed in the morning, while Yam Deep Daan is celebrated in the evening of the Trayodashi.
On this day, devotees particularly worship Lord Dhanvantari, along with the deities of wealth, Kubera, and Lakshmi. Dhanteras is also considered a day dedicated to Kubera.
Worshipping Kubera is believed to bring prosperity. On this day, people buy precious metals, new utensils, jewelry, and vehicles. It is a customary practice to worship the bought items and idols with lamps during the Diwali festivities. According to religious beliefs, Lord Dhanvantari emerged holding a pot of nectar during the churning of the ocean.
Lord Dhanvantari is regarded as the physician of the gods and is associated with health, longevity, and vitality. He is one of the 24 incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
Dhanteras is seen as a day for prosperity to enter households. The shopping done on this day is considered auspicious. People believe that special blessings from Lakshmi are bestowed, leading to the purchase of specific items. Traditionally, gold, silver, and brass utensils are favored purchases.
Those looking to buy vehicles often anticipate this day. Purchasing vehicles is considered auspicious on Dhanteras, and since many promotional offers are available during the Dashain-Tihar period in Nepal, vehicle sales typically peak on this day.
Dealerships make their showrooms more attractive and offer special schemes to provide vehicles to customers during this festive season.
Additionally, vehicles booked in advance are delivered on this day. The trend of new customers purchasing vehicles without cash is also increasing. Especially during the days of the Dashain festival, Dhanteras, and the auspicious day of Lakshmi Puja, vehicle sales are believed to soar.
