Outside the legislative halls, the political tension has spilled onto the streets, coinciding with a nationwide protest called by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and other farm unions.
These groups argue that allowing duty-free access for American farm products—such as soybean oil and animal feed—threatens the livelihoods of millions of small-scale Indian farmers. While Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has defended the pact as a “historic” move that protects sensitive dairy and grain sectors while opening up a $30 trillion market, the opposition remains unconvinced, demanding a full parliamentary debate and the withdrawal of provisions they deem “anti-national.”
