Kathmandu – Khagendra Sunar, a Dalit activist, has been appointed as the new Minister for Employment and Social Security in Prime Minister Sushila Karki’s cabinet.
Sunar, known for his outspoken advocacy for Dalit rights, is a well-known figure in Nepal’s struggle for social justice.
Sunar’s appointment comes after he gained widespread attention for his campaign to raise awareness about Dalit issues, especially after launching the “Where are the Dalits?” campaign in Kathmandu, where he painted his body with nail polish as a symbol of protest.
Born in 1990 in Chhatikot, Dailekh, Sunar has long been active in advocating for Dalit rights, particularly in the Karnali region.
A graduate in Political Science and History from RR Campus in Kathmandu, he also has a background in journalism and has worked in various media outlets, including Radio Panchkosi and Radio Sagarmatha, before turning to activism.
An unwavering voice for the Dalit community, Sunar has led multiple protests, hunger strikes, and demonstrations to ensure Dalit representation in constitutional bodies and political appointments.
One of his most notable actions was in 2020, when he protested at the District Administration Office in Rukum West after the brutal killings of Navaraj Bikas and five others. He continues to demand justice for the victims, raising his voice against caste-based discrimination.
Through his new ministerial role, Sunar plans to further amplify the concerns of marginalized communities and work toward ensuring social security and employment opportunities for Dalits across the country.
