New York City’s newly inaugurated Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is facing intense public backlash following the release of a massive trove of documents related to the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Protesters gathered outside the Mayor’s residence, chanting slogans and expressing a deep sense of betrayal. The demonstrations erupted after the U.S. Department of Justice released over 3 million pages of records on January 30, which included references to the Mayor’s mother, the acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair.
The controversy stems from an October 2009 email sent by publicist Peggy Siegal regarding an “after-party” held at Ghislaine Maxwell’s New York townhouse. The email lists Mira Nair alongside high-profile figures such as Bill Clinton, Jeff Bezos, and Jean Pigozzi. While the specific film isn’t named in the email, it is widely believed to be the post-screening celebration for Nair’s 2009 biopic Amelia. Although the records reference a social event from over a decade ago, protesters argue that the association is a stain on the Mayor’s administration.
The document release is part of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, comprising 180,000 photos, 2,000 videos, and investigations into Epstein’s death and the FBI’s conduct. This political firestorm comes just one month after Mamdani took office on January 1, following a victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. At 34 years old, Mamdani is currently the youngest person and the first Muslim to serve as the Mayor of New York City.
