KATHMANDU: U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has agreed not to develop nuclear weapons, reiterating that preventing Iran from acquiring such weapons remains his primary objective. In an interview, Trump stated that Iran initially agreed to halt nuclear weapons development and subsequently reaffirmed its commitment not to purchase them when questioned on the matter.
Trump emphasized that he is in no hurry to reach an agreement, asserting that the United States is holding out for an “excellent deal.” However, he issued a stern warning, noting that military options remain on the table to resolve the dispute if negotiations fall through. According to the U.S. President, a successful agreement would save many lives and lead to the immediate reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. He also claimed that the U.S. is gradually succeeding in getting Iran to accept its terms.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned at a security summit in Singapore that the U.S. is fully prepared to resume military action if talks with Iran fail. This warning comes amidst ongoing efforts between Washington and Tehran to bridge gaps in a proposed agreement. Under the current proposal, a temporary ceasefire initiated in early April would be extended by an additional 60 days to lay the groundwork for a permanent settlement.
While Trump stated he would make a final decision on the proposal following a White House meeting on Friday, the decision was postponed after discussions lasted for about two hours. On the other side, Iran has not declared any official deadline. Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, expressed deep distrust toward the United States via social media, making it clear that Tehran will not take any new steps until Washington demonstrates concrete actions. He added that Iran is currently under no pressure to rush into an agreement.
