In a major development related to the Jeffrey Epstein sex crimes case, the British police have made their second-largest operation. Peter Mandelson, the former British Ambassador to the US, was arrested on suspicion of abusing his public office. The 72-year-old was detained from an address in North London, according to the Metropolitan Police. Although the name was not mentioned in the police statement, it has been confirmed that the individual arrested was Mandelson. No charges of sexual abuse have been levied against him.
According to reports, the investigation was further advanced following the release of additional documents by the US Department of Justice. The documents suggest that Mandelson, who was the Business Secretary during the 2009 global financial crisis, had shared sensitive government information related to markets with Epstein. At that time, Gordon Brown was the Prime Minister of the UK. Mandelson had also served as the European Commissioner and was later appointed the British Ambassador to the US. He was appointed Ambassador in December 2024 by then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer but was removed from the position in September 2025.
Previously, in connection with the same case, Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, a member of the British royal family, was detained for questioning and released after 11 hours. Police have stated that investigations into potential data leaks dating back nearly 15 years are ongoing.
