AI safety company Anthropic announced that it has successfully identified and disrupted several attempts to misuse its artificial intelligence systems for high-risk operations, including cyber espionage, surveillance, online fraud, propaganda campaigns, and the development of biological and conventional weapons. According to the company’s latest threat intelligence report, which covers activity detected between December 2025 and August 2026, Anthropic intercepted five separate cases related to potential biological weapons development and six instances linked to conventional weapons research.
The report revealed that threat actors included state-sponsored cyber groups, such as those linked to Russia, and propaganda outlets associated with Iran. Warning that biological weapons proliferation poses an extreme existential threat if proper safeguards are lacking, Anthropic confirmed it has tightened its security measures, permanently banned the involved accounts, and shared threat intelligence with government authorities and industry partners to mitigate potential harm.
