Kathmandu: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed allegations of genocide in Gaza, calling them the “biggest lie of the century,” during his address to the United Nations General Assembly. As Netanyahu walked up to the podium, a large number of delegates from various countries staged a collective walkout, leaving most of the seats in the assembly hall empty. While sparse applause was heard from a few attendees, vocal protests broke out in parts of the chamber. Criticizing the representatives who walked out, Netanyahu labeled them as “moral cowards”. He defended Israel’s military actions in Gaza as an act of self-defense and firmly rejected accusations of genocide. Furthermore, he justified Israel’s military strikes against Iran, claiming that Israel is acting not only for its own security but also for the protection of other nations.
Prior to his speech, Palestinian representatives had appealed to delegates from various member states to stage a joint walkout in protest. Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stated that Palestinians will not leave their homeland and demanded that the international community take concrete steps to halt the destruction in Gaza and the West Bank. Netanyahu’s address comes amid escalating international pressure on Israel over the ongoing conflict. The war between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7, 2023, has led to immense loss of life and massive devastation across Gaza.
