Kathmandu, April 17
The 2022 Everest International Model United Nations (EIMUN) conference kicks off in the capital today which will be held until Thursday. For the opening ceremony, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Diplomacy, Bureau of South and Central Asia (SCA) Ambassador Kelly Keiderling, Director for Social Affairs of SAARC Ismail Mamdhood, and Head of UN Women Navanita Sinha addressed the young crowd who are participating from over 10 countries of Asia.
Ambassador Keiderling highlighted that democracy, security, and prosperity are important elements in the society. She invited the young leaders to think and act upon the ways through which they can lead a world that is more just and dignified for each human being. Director Mamdhood refreshed the crowd’s memories of various youth-led conferences and programs under SAARC and underscored the importance of regional integration for sustainable economic gains. Head of UN Women Sihna emphasized the systematic challenges accompanied by the COVID-19 pandemic and applauded initiatives such as Model UN conferences where young minds develop leadership skills. The partnership between Youth Thinkers’ Society (YTS) and the US Embassy in Nepal is welcoming over 100 youth with the theme of building a resilient post-pandemic world and enhancing regional connectivity.
Model UN conferences are academic and diplomatic simulations of the United Nations, where individuals learn about diplomatic practices and international political dynamics where students are assigned as the representative of a country or organization and must solve a problem with other delegates from around the world.
Started in 2014, EIMUN is the first and only long running international Model United Nations conference. Youth Thinkers’ Society (YTS), a youth-led independent organization, has been organizing various national and international MUNs since its establishment.
