Gandaki : Lamjung Palace, originally built during the ’24 Principalities era (Chaubise Rajya), is currently being rebuilt. The Department of Archaeology started reconstructing the palace two years ago due to its deterioration. It’s estimated the palace was first built in the 16th century.
Engineer Govinda Adhikari from the Department reports that reconstruction is now 70% complete. The goal is to finish within the next fiscal year, assuming there are no shortages of resources.
Construction began last year with a budget of Rs 13.3 million, and this fiscal year the government allocated Rs 5 million more. The Bhaktapur-based construction company NPS handled the first year, with RGS Bishnu JV taking over this year.
The palace is being rebuilt in its original antique style. Simultaneously, the historic Kalika temple is also being reconstructed in a pagoda style. The palace will have three stories with an attic, using materials like bricks, wood, and brick powder imported from Bhaktapur.
Due to budget constraints, progress has been slow this year. Rajendra Bohora, Chairperson of the Gaunsahar Kalika Temple Preservation and Management Committee, expressed concern. He emphasized the need for increased investment from federal, provincial, and local governments to complete the reconstruction.
Bohora hopes that once completed, the palace can become a tourist attraction, boosting Lamjung’s reputation locally and internationally.
