Kathmandu – Tomato prices in Pakistan have soared to unprecedented levels, with costs reaching anywhere between 500 to 700 Pakistani Rupees per kilogram in various cities across the country.
Local media reports highlight that in Karachi and Islamabad’s vegetable markets, wholesale prices on Sunday night were as high as 550 Rupees per kilogram in Karachi and 500 Rupees per kilogram in Islamabad.
In retail markets, tomatoes are now selling for up to 700 Rupees per kilogram in both cities. Traders cite a combination of factors driving the price hike, including supply disruptions from Afghanistan and Iran, damage to crops due to heavy rains and floods, and a decline in agricultural production in Balochistan.
The recent floods in Punjab have also contributed to the rising prices of other vegetables, with no immediate relief expected.
Experts suggest that with these ongoing challenges, the current price surge may continue for the foreseeable future, leaving consumers struggling to cope with the steep rise in food costs.
