Kathmandu : Nepal plans to expand flood early-warning systems across six major river basins and reduce water levels in four high-risk glacial lakes to minimise disaster risks.
According to the 2026–27 white paper published by the Hydrology and Water Resources Research Centre, early-warning systems will be installed in the Mawa-Ratuwa, Bakraha, Lakhandehi, East Rapti, West Rapti and Mohana-Khutiya river basins.
The government has also prioritised the GLOF Sanjibani Project to lower water levels in Thulagi, Lower Barun, Lumding Tsho and Hongu-2 glacial lakes. The project will run from 2026 to 2033, with an estimated budget of $49.9 million.
The centre is also strengthening hydrological monitoring, scientific research and data collection to address growing risks from climate change, glacier melt and glacial lake outburst floods.
Nepal has established more than 250 monitoring stations to collect real-time hydrological and meteorological data. The centre aims to strengthen flood forecasting, improve disaster preparedness and promote sustainable management of the country’s water resources.
