KATHMANDU, Oct. 3: The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) declined 42.56 points, or 1.62 percent, last week as selling pressure intensified in the secondary market ahead of the upcoming festivals.
The NEPSE index opened the week at 2,629.81 points and closed at 2,587.25 points. This marked the fourth consecutive weekly decline in the stock market.
During the review period, the index reached a weekly high of 2,638.28 points and a low of 2,582.36 points, resulting in a volatility of 55.92 points.
The market gained just 0.26 points on Thursday, while it declined on the other four trading days. The highest single-day decline was recorded on Monday, when the index dropped 16.47 points, or 0.62 percent.
All 13 sectoral indices closed lower during the week. The life insurance sector recorded the largest decline in points, falling 232.76 points, while the hotels and tourism sector posted the biggest percentage decline, dropping 2.71 percent.
Among individual companies, Sindhu Bikas Bank recorded the highest gain, with its share price rising 7.20 percent. Apollo Hydropower Limited suffered the largest decline, with its share price falling 11.80 percent.
Average daily turnover also declined significantly to Rs. 4.798 billion, down from Rs. 6.285 billion in the previous week. This represents a decline of 23.65 percent in daily trading activity.
Meanwhile, the total market capitalization fell to Rs. 4.450 trillion from Rs. 4.523 trillion, resulting in a decline of around Rs. 73 billion in investors’ wealth during the week.
In the previous week, investors had already suffered a loss of approximately Rs. 29.9 billion in market capitalization.
