Kathmandu – BYD’s cheapest hatchback, the Seagull, is confirmed to be coming to Nepal. This new car is set to be sold by BYD’s official distributor in Nepal, Simec Inc., in the coming months. According to company sources, a unit of the Seagull has already arrived at the customs checkpoint for testing, and sales are expected to begin shortly.
BYD recently updated its electric hatchback, the Seagull, in China, and the same updated version will be available in Nepal.
The Seagull, built on BYD’s E-Platform 3.0, features an electrically adjustable driver’s seat. In China, the updated Seagull is available in three variants, equipped with battery packs of 30.08 kWh and 38.88 kWh, which are claimed to provide a range of 305 km and 405 km on a full charge, respectively. The car has a 55 kW motor and supports DC fast charging.
The interior of the new car includes a 10.1-inch rotatable infotainment system and a 7-inch instrument cluster. Additional features include OTA updates, four speakers, voice integration, in-car Wi-Fi, 4G network capability, and keyless entry.
In China, the price of the Seagull is set between $9,700 and $12,000. It is estimated to be priced around NPR 3 million when it hits the Nepali market.
The Seagull has generated considerable interest in Nepal, with many EV enthusiasts eagerly awaiting its arrival, especially due to its expected low price. Upon its launch, it will face direct competition from Dongfeng and Tata Tiago. Both the Tiago and the Namy are currently performing well in the hatchback segment.
Similar to BYD’s previous successful launches in Nepal, such as the Atto 3 and Dolphin, the Seagull is also expected to perform well. It is anticipated that the Seagull will become a market leader in the entry-level hatchback category, following the success of BYD’s compact SUV, the Atto 3, and the premium hatchback, the Dolphin.
