Kathmandu. The process of extraditing the main accused in the Goa nightclub ‘Birch by Romeo Lane’ fire case, Saurabh Luthra and Gaurav Luthra, from Thailand to India has begun. Thai police detained the two brothers in Phuket on Thursday.
Thai police are now taking them to Bangkok. Indian agencies will take them into custody at Suvarnabhumi Airport. They will then reportedly be taken to the Suan Phlu Immigration Detention Center. Since their passports have been cancelled, the Indian Embassy will issue them emergency travel documents.
As there are no direct flights from Thailand to Goa, the Luthra brothers will be taken from Bangkok to Delhi and then to Goa. This entire process is expected to take about four days. They are anticipated to arrive in Delhi by Monday. Upon arrival, Goa Police will take them into custody.
The fire at the Birch nightclub on December 6 killed 25 people, including five Nepalese citizens. Following the incident, the club owners fled India and reached Thailand. Thai police held them in a hotel room in Phuket.
Investigations revealed that even as fire fighting teams were trying to control the blaze and rescue people trapped inside, Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra booked flight tickets for Thailand. Authorities found that the Luthra brothers logged into an online travel company’s website at 1:17 AM on December 6. They departed from Delhi for Phuket on IndiGo flight 6E 1073 at 5:30 AM.
Goa Police, through the Ministry of External Affairs and the CBI, appealed to the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) for their arrest. Subsequently, Interpol issued a Blue Corner Notice against them.
The Luthra brothers, their business partners, manager, and some employees are residents of Delhi. Therefore, Delhi Police is now investigating the fire incident alongside Goa Police, and a case has also been registered in Delhi.
