In a sharp diplomatic escalation, Iran has announced retaliatory measures against the European Union (EU) by designating all EU military forces as terrorist groups.
This move follows a recent decision by the European Union to add Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to its list of terrorist organizations, citing the group’s role in the violent suppression of nationwide protests.
The announcement was made by the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, who appeared in a parliamentary session wearing the IRGC uniform as a gesture of solidarity.
Qalibaf stated that the decision is based on a 2019 Iranian law, originally passed after the United States designated the Guard as a terrorist group. This legislation grants Iran the authority to take reciprocal action against any nation or entity that applies such a designation to its military branches.
The timing of this decision coincides with a period of intense regional tension. U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly been exploring potential military strike options against Iran, while the Iranian military has scheduled strategic live-fire exercises in the Strait of Hormuz.
This vital waterway serves as a global energy chokepoint, through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil trade passes.
During the parliamentary session, Speaker Qalibaf criticized European leaders, arguing that by attacking the IRGC—which he claimed is a primary barrier against the spread of terrorism to Europe—the EU has “shot itself in the foot.” He accused European nations of “blind obedience” to American policy and of acting against the interests of their own citizens.
The session concluded with lawmakers chanting “Death to America” and “Death to Israel,” signaling a further hardening of Tehran’s stance against Western pressure.
