KATHMANDU — Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, a fresh bout of tension has erupted between Iran and Ukraine. Following an alleged attack on its vessel in the Caspian Sea, Iran summoned a Ukrainian diplomatic official to formally lodge a strong protest. Meanwhile, Ukraine has maintained that it targeted vessels linked to the transport of military supplies involving Iran.
According to Iranian authorities, the attack in the Caspian Sea resulted in the death of one merchant sailor and left another injured. In response to the incident, Tehran summoned the Ukrainian diplomatic representative to express severe condemnation and sharp opposition.
On the other side, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asserted that Kyiv’s forces carried out successful operations against vessels in the Caspian Sea that were being used to transport military cargo connected to Iran. However, he did not explicitly confirm whether an Iranian commercial ship had been directly targeted.
Ukraine has long accused Iran of supplying Russia with Shahed kamikaze drones, which Moscow frequently utilizes to launch aerial strikes across Ukrainian territory.
In turn, President Zelenskyy claimed that Russia has been reciprocating by providing Iran with satellite-based intelligence to support military operations in the Middle East.
Analysts point out that this latest incident demonstrates how the repercussions of the Russia-Ukraine war are beginning to manifest directly in the diplomatic and strategic relations between Iran and Ukraine.
