Kathmandu- The funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has concluded in his hometown of Mashhad. He was buried within the Imam Reza Shrine complex, officially marking the end of six days of state mourning and funeral processions. Millions of people from various cities across Iran and Iraq participated in the final tributes. Before the funeral, Khamenei’s body was kept in major cities, including Tehran and Qom, for public viewing. On the final day, after his body was brought to Mashhad, a massive crowd of supporters gathered. Slogans against the United States and Israel were chanted during the final procession. According to Iranian state media, the 101-year-old cleric, Ayatollah Hussein Noori Hamedani, led the funeral prayers (Janazah).
Khamenei’s son and potential successor, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, was not seen publicly at the funeral. Iranian media reported that he did not participate in the public events due to security and health reasons. However, he expressed his grief through a written message, thanking everyone who offered condolences and paid tribute. Meanwhile, military tensions between the United States and Iran have intensified once again. The United States launched fresh airstrikes on various Iranian military structures on Thursday morning. Although Iran alleged that an attack took place near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, it stated that the facility suffered no damage. According to the US Central Command, missiles and drones have been launched at more than 170 Iranian military targets over the past two days, resulting in the reported deaths of 14 people.
The US military stated that the strikes targeted air defense systems, drone and missile storage facilities, military boats, and military structures around the Strait of Hormuz. Released footage showed strikes hitting airport runways and missile launch sites. In response to the US attacks, Iran claimed to have launched drone and missile strikes against US military bases in Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Iran asserted that it targeted Kuwait’s missile defense system, Qatar’s early warning system, and a US military fuel storage facility in Bahrain. Additionally, missiles were reportedly fired toward Jordan’s Azraq military base, where US troops and fighter jets are deployed.
