Kathmandu — A ninth-grade student in Thailand shot and killed his grandparents at their home before opening fire indiscriminately at a nearby school, killing eight people, near the capital city of Bangkok. The deceased include five teachers and three students, while 15 others sustained injuries.
According to the police, the tragic incident took place at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi Province. Preliminary investigations revealed that prior to heading to the school, the student had murdered his grandmother and grandfather at home, where officers subsequently recovered both bodies.
Police confirmed that the 9mm handgun used in the shooting belonged to the student’s grandfather, who was a teacher by profession.
The shooter was also critically injured during the incident and has been admitted to the hospital for treatment. Police stated that an investigation into the underlying motive behind the attack is currently underway.
Following the tragic event, the Prime Minister of Thailand expressed deep sorrow and directed authorities to ensure proper medical treatment for the injured and comprehensive support for the victimized families.
According to eyewitnesses, students hid inside classrooms upon hearing gunfire to save their lives. Shortly after, police officers knocked on the doors and safely evacuated them from the premises.
The shooting triggered widespread panic and a chaotic rush across the school campus. Outside the school gates, distressed bystanders were seen comforting one another.
Thailand has witnessed similar shootings at schools and public places in the past. In the wake of such tragedies, the government frequently vows to step up monitoring of firearm accessibility and mental health support. However, recurring incidents continue to raise serious questions regarding safety and security in schools and public spaces.
