Kathmandu- Public support for U.S. President Donald Trump has dropped to the lowest point of his political career. A nationwide Reuters/Ipsos survey reveals growing voter preference for the Democratic Party, driven by mounting public dissatisfaction over the U.S. war with Iran and the Republican-led economic administration.
According to the public poll, only 33% of Americans approve of Trump’s performance in the White House. This marks the third consecutive Reuters/Ipsos survey in which his approval rating has remained stagnant at 33%.
The sharp decline in voter approval presents a major hurdle for the Republican Party as it attempts to protect its narrow congressional majority in the upcoming midterm elections on November 3.
The survey shows a clear gap in voter enthusiasm between the two parties. About 46% of self-identified Democrats stated they are “extremely enthusiastic” about voting in the November elections, compared to just 31% of Republicans expressing similar sentiment.When independent voters were asked which party they would back if generic congressional elections were held immediately, 36% chose the Democratic Party, while only 22% supported the Republican Party.
The four-day survey gathered responses from 1,167 adult participants across the United States.Trump’s approval rating began slipping in mid-August to levels previously seen only briefly during the initial stage of his first presidential term. By contrast, at the start of his current term, his job performance was approved by 47% of Americans. His current approval rate has dropped below the lowest point recorded for his predecessor, Democratic President Joe Biden, whose approval rating hit a low of 35% in October 2024.Much like Biden, Trump faces severe public backlash over rising inflation and the high cost of living. Domestic petrol prices rose significantly after Trump ordered air strikes against Iran in February.
The poll reveals that only 36% of Americans support the ongoing military conflict with Iran.Despite temporary dips in military intensity, recent exchanges of missile strikes between the U.S. and Iran have reignited tensions. Since the outbreak of hostilities, Iran has caused major disruptions along key global oil shipping routes. The survey highlights that 71% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s management of the cost of living, a figure that includes roughly 40% of Republican voters. For the first time in nearly a decade, registered voters surveyed over the past month indicated that Democrats hold a more credible economic strategy than Republicans. The survey carried a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
