The Singaporean government has decided to increase the annual salaries for top public officials, including the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers. With this increase, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong—already the highest-paid political leader in the world—will see his annual compensation rise from SGD 2.2 million to SGD 3.6 million (approximately USD 2.8 million). Prime Minister Wong’s overall salary package will increase by SGD 1.4 million (around USD 1.1 million); however, he has announced that he will donate the entire increase to charitable causes over the next five years. Proponents of the decision argue that high remuneration is necessary to attract top-tier talent into public service and to prevent government corruption.
Under the revised structure, the entry-level base annual salary for Cabinet Ministers will rise from approximately SGD 1.1 million to SGD 1.2 million (around USD 940,000). Depending on performance, most ministers are expected to earn up to SGD 1.35 million (roughly USD 1.05 million) by the end of the current government’s term. Despite these administrative rationale, the decision has drawn significant criticism from the public amid rising living costs, job insecurity, and growing youth unemployment concerns. Critics view the pay hikes as out of touch with ordinary citizens, noting that Singapore’s median monthly income stands at SGD 5,775 (about USD 4,500), while recent government data indicates that job retrenchments reached a five-year high last quarter.
The salary structure for Singapore’s political leadership remains exceptionally high when compared to other global leaders. For comparison, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee earns an annual salary of approximately USD 719,000, while Swiss President Guy Parmelin receives around USD 606,000. U.S. President Donald Trump receives an annual salary of USD 400,000, and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham earns about USD 230,000. Despite public scrutiny, the Singaporean government continues to maintain that robust financial compensation plays a critical role in keeping government corruption exceptionally low.
