Buenos Aires: Lionel Messi is set to make his final appearance for Argentina on Tuesday as the South American champions face Benin in a farewell friendly at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
The 39-year-old superstar is expected to bring his illustrious international career to an end after more than two decades representing Argentina. The match will mark Messi’s final outing in the iconic Albiceleste jersey, with the veteran forward also set to relinquish the captain’s armband.
Around 85,000 fans are expected to gather at the Monumental to witness the emotional occasion.
Messi will be joined by several of the teammates who helped Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, while a number of players from the country’s emerging generation are also expected to feature.
The farewell marks the closing chapter of one of the most remarkable international careers in football history, while also signalling the beginning of a new era for the reigning world champions.
