KATHMANDU: Nepal Police Inspector General (IGP) Dan Bahadur Karki has called an emergency meeting of the Policy Coordination Committee (PCC) at Police Headquarters amid growing speculation about his possible removal and reports of strained relations between the police leadership and the government.
The meeting is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Thursday at Police Headquarters in Naxal. Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) serving as chiefs of all seven provincial police offices have been summoned, along with Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) working in the Kathmandu Valley.
PCC meetings are generally attended by DIGs and Additional Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) based in the Kathmandu Valley. However, this time, provincial police chiefs and SSP-level officers have also been called to participate, according to sources at Police Headquarters.
Sources said the meeting will focus on matters related to peace and security. The PCC usually discusses organizational affairs, policy decisions, coordination and the development of a common institutional position within Nepal Police.
The decision to convene an emergency meeting with a broader group of senior officers, with peace and security reportedly on the agenda, has drawn attention amid the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the police leadership.
The meeting comes as reports of deteriorating relations between IGP Karki and the government continue to circulate. Speculation has also intensified over whether Prime Minister Balendra Shah is seeking to remove Karki from the post.
However, Police Headquarters has not officially confirmed whether the meeting is directly linked to the speculation over the IGP’s position.
The meeting is expected to bring senior police officials together to discuss security-related concerns and coordination within the organization as attention remains focused on the future of the current police leadership.
