In neighboring India, vehicles are frequently stolen and smuggled into Nepal, where they are sold with fake registration numbers and documents. In the past fiscal year, the Kathmandu Traffic Police Office has seized 14 such stolen vehicles from various locations within the Kathmandu Valley.
Stolen vehicles, when operated illegally, can lead to increased criminal activities. Therefore, it is crucial for everyone to be vigilant and cautious to avoid unnecessary legal issues when purchasing a vehicle.
Here are some indicators that a vehicle might be stolen and tips on how to avoid buying one:
Signs of a Stolen Vehicle:
– Damaged Parts: Look for issues with the key hole (trunk or door) or other parts of the vehicle.
– Tampered Numbers: Check for altered chassis or engine numbers.
– Repaired Chassis: Be wary of sections of the chassis number that appear to be cut and pasted.
– Fake Keys: The vehicle may have counterfeit keys.
– Matching Model and Color: Be cautious if a vehicle has a fake number plate but matches the make, model, and color of another vehicle.
– Unusual Usage: Watch out for vehicles used in abnormal or reckless manners.
Preventive Measures:
– Verify Vehicle Details: When purchasing a vehicle, examine it for the above signs. Ensure that the vehicle does not have tampered parts or fake documentation.
– Diplomatic Vehicles: If buying a vehicle from a diplomatic mission or special organization, verify that it has been issued a number according to the mission’s code and check the updated records.
– Heavy Equipment and Projects: Confirm that vehicles or heavy equipment from various projects have been returned after the project’s completion.
– Safety Measures: Install central locking, alarms, and other security devices on your vehicle. Even if parked in a secure location, always lock your vehicle to avoid complacency.
– Verify Documents: When buying from a private seller or dealer, cross-check the registration book (blue book), vehicle details, and records with the Transport Management Office.
By paying close attention to these details, you can avoid purchasing stolen vehicles and protect your own vehicle from theft. Regular vigilance and awareness are essential to prevent criminal activities associated with stolen vehicles.
