The political landscape in Venezuela has once again taken a tense turn. Alex Saab, a close associate and former industry minister of the deposed president Nicolás Maduro, has been extradited to the United States. Saab is a wealthy businessman born in Colombia and is considered one of Maduro’s closest allies.
Earlier in February, he was arrested in Caracas during a joint operation by American and Venezuelan authorities. However, detailed information regarding the specific charges leveled against him has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Prior to this, Alex Saab was arrested in the West African nation of Cape Verde in 2020. At that time, he faced money laundering charges and was subsequently extradited to the United States. However, he was granted a pardon three years later.
Meanwhile, it was claimed that in January, the United States launched a special military operation in Venezuela, during which Nicolás Maduro was arrested and brought to the US.
During his court hearing in the United States, Maduro claimed that he is the legitimate president of the Republic of Venezuela and asserted that he had been kidnapped from his home. He stated that he was arrested directly from his residence in Caracas.
