Chinese companies are often considered adept at imitation. In this context, it has been observed that Xiaomi is preparing to launch its electric SUV, the SU7, while a copycat version has already appeared in the Chinese market.
This vehicle is called Yulei, and it is manufactured by Shandong Yanlu New Energy. While the Xiaomi SU7 is a sedan, the Yulei is a compact SUV. Xiaomi plans to release its first EV early next year, but the Yulei is already available.
The designers of Yulei have closely imitated Xiaomi’s design, particularly in the front face, headlight, and hood shape, which resemble Xiaomi’s blue signature color.
The copycat SU7, or Yulei, falls under the category of low-speed electric vehicles (LSEVs). Such EVs are smaller and more accessible to the general public, with limited speed and range.
Chinese media has nicknamed the Yulei the Redmi SU7, drawing a parallel to Xiaomi’s Redmi brand, which is known for producing affordable smartphones.
The Xiaomi SU7 was launched in China on March 28. The company planned to deliver 100,000 units by November, but due to high demand, the target has now increased to 120,000 units.
