kathamandu . In a landmark initiative blending innovation with environmental responsibility, Ncell Foundation, Khaalisisi, and Budhanilkantha Municipality are jointly hosting Nepal’s first flagship waste hackathon, ‘Bin There, Hacked That’, on June 5 to mark World Environment Day 2025.
This pioneering event will be held at Budhanilkantha Municipality Hall and aims to bring together tech enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, designers, and environmental advocates to tackle Nepal’s mounting waste crisis through technology, collaboration, and creative thinking.
In a powerful demonstration of Public-Private Partnership (PPP), the hackathon bridges digital pioneers, Nepal’s formal waste sector, and progressive local governance to co-develop sustainable, scalable solutions. The primary focus areas include transforming landfill systems into circular models, addressing waste incineration alternatives, empowering women in the waste economy, and digitising trash management systems.
“Ncell Foundation is proud to support this landmark initiative that blends digital innovation with environmental stewardship,” said Bishakha Lakshi Khadka, Director at Ncell Foundation & Special Projects. “We believe this hackathon will unlock creative, tech-first solutions to one of Nepal’s most pressing civic challenges—waste.”
Nepal currently generates more than 3,000 tons of waste daily, yet less than 5% of the waste workforce comprises women, and recycling infrastructure remains nascent. This hackathon aims to flip the narrative, positioning waste not as a burden but as an opportunity for innovation, dignity, and inclusive growth.
“This is more than just a hackathon—it’s a national call to rethink waste as a source of innovation, income, and impact,” said Amun Thapa, Founder & CEO of Khaalisisi. “With this platform, we are building pathways for youth, women, and technologists to co-create Nepal’s circular future.”
Applications are open until May 28, inviting participation from students, startups, engineers, designers, coders, and informal sector champions. Participants will ideate and develop solutions under four key themes: Landfill to Circularity, Waste Without Smoke, Women in Waste Entrepreneurship, and Digitize Trash.
The initiative is backed by a diverse coalition of supporters including Golyan Group, Plast Nepal Foundation, Coca-Cola Beverages Nepal, CNIYEF, Nabil Bank, Grow By Idea, Cloudfactory, Fusemachines, Model Institute of Technology (MIT), Byapar Pathshala, and Ace Institute of Management.
For more information or to apply, interested individuals can visit the event’s official platform and be part of building a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable Nepal.
